The President's Corner

David Lovelady

Welcome to my little corner of Maryland's Eastern Shore, where I get to wax philosophic on topics of my choosing. This is where I can let off steam and say what's on my mind. My preference has been to work behind the scenes, but here's where I step out in front of the podium and lay it on the line. If we're not addressing something you believe we should, I'd love to hear from you at david.lovelady@republicancouncil.org

What is Happening to Our World?

I've just finished reading Sarah Palin's book, Going Rogue, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It makes you wonder why our public servants subject themselves to the kind of character assassination that they do, both for themselves and their families. Where did the civility go?

Who said, "I can see Russia from my house"? I already knew the answer, but, while reading the book, I put that question to a very knowledgeable political junkie, and she got it wrong. Sarah Palin never said anything like that. It was her imitator on Saturday Night Live, but it was picked up by the bloggers and the media, and now it's part of "history."

Right now, there are many who say that Governor Palin isn't ready for public office at a high level, but I beg to differ. The first step is to get educated; the second step is not to believe everything you hear or read; the third step is to understand that there are always at least two sides to every story. Get at least two sides before making up your mind.

I'm reminded of a local event that occurred during the last election season here in Talbot County. In a domestic dispute, a candidate for office was accused of some pretty terrible things, and it was all over the news. I remember a phone call from a dear friend saying how terrible it was and how could he do it, etc. I said that we should wait until we hear the other side of the story. As it turns out, it was all a complete lie and was proven so, right after the election was over and he lost. I dare say, to this day, the majority of voters in the County still think he's guilty.

What a terrible ordeal to go through in private, among family and friends, let alone in public. How nasty have we become? How ruthless, where politics are concerned? Our propensity for scandal has created a market for paparazzis (think Princess Diana) and tabloids and 24-hour news and blogs that must be filled with something, even if it's not true.

One of our goals for this site and our Organization is to be your "credible source" of information. If we say it, we've checked it out. We may even teach you how to check it out yourself by learning how to search the internet. We'll always be honest; we don't claim to be perfect, but we won't ever be wrong out of malice or laziness or for sensationalism. And we may not always toe the Party line. We're Republicans, but we're not beholden to anyone, anywhere. We'll tell it like it is.

Hold tight.  It's going to be a bumpy ride.
